What is SearchMetrics?

SearchMetrics is a suite of fullservice SEO tools. Basically, SearchMetrics have developed three distinct functionalities in the SearchMetrics suite: the ResearchCloud, Projects and Content Experience.

SearchMetrics basically allows you to tab into a huge database of keywords and rankings that SearchMetrics have collected over the years. Data that you can use for powerful keyword research, but also for rank tracking. Apart from that SearchMetrics have also developed their own crawler that can help you perform site audits and keep SEO health in top.

SearchMetrics: Projects

There is a lot of feature within Projects that are really interesting to use. I will explain some of the features later on in this review.

Basically, what Projects allow you to do is two things:

  • Keyword tracking: Upload keywords to a given url and then do continuous rank tracking of those keywords.
  • Site audit: Crawl your website for technical issues on a continuous basis to keep track of health issues like 404s, 301s etc.

On top of that SearchMetrics have built a couple of different views, where data is crossed so that you can perform deep audits and analysis of you websites’ SEO performance.

SearchMetrics have also built link and social data into the tool, but the data sources for this is mediocre at best, and shouldn’t be relied on. If you prefer to only use SearchMetrics however, you can upload links from other sources. But, this in my opinion, doesn’t make much sense.

All of this data leads down to one of the strongest things about SearchMetrics: their Dashboards. You can build Dashboards for yourself, but especially for clients that let you and clients easily get an overview of the performance across the board. SearchMetrics is one of the only tools on the market that can can create standalone Dashboards that cover all aspects of SEO.

SearchMetrics: ResearchCloud

While Projects demand that you upload your own keywords chosen through keyword research, SearchMetrics Research Cloud let you tab into a huge database of keywords and pull out rankings.

You can pull out data and do various different analysis and audits including:

  • Visibility development of any domain: You look up any domain and see the visibility development of that url. This is great for researching competitors or when pitching a new SEO client.
  • Longtail domain keyword rankings: Look up thousands of keywords that any domain is ranking for, including monthly volume on that keyword together with ranking and urls. SearchMetrics has an invaluable tool for keyword research.
  • URL specific audits: Looking up any url and get scores on various parameters, including competitive metrics, what keywords the url are ranking for, and how well the content is optimized.
  • Market analysis: Look up any domain and see which competitors’ domains are closest in terms of ranking for similar keywords, but also what other keywords they are ranking for. This let you understand, not only the competitive landscape, but also the keyword universe around any giving domain. Extremely powerful.

For the Research Cloud you as a user of SearchMetrics don’t have to buy for each domain you want to analyse and track. Here you just buy one license and you are good to go across all the employees and domains you want to check.

SearchMetrics: Content Experience

The third tool that SearchMetrics have developed is Content Experience. Where Projects and Research Cloud have allowed you do keyword research, site audits and competitor analysis, Content Experience is more of an executional tool.

Content Experience is a content management tool where you do research for what content you need to create, project manage the content production, create the content within the tool with access to a lot of data, and track the effect of the content.

In other words Content Experience is for the content marketing team that want everything in one tool.

The discovery part of Content Experience is a whole new way of looking at keywords that are very interesting. SearchMetrics has via AI been trying to put intention on keywords that are visualized in node diagrams when researching for keywords. This is smart because this makes keyword research very easy when doing it at a micro level when researching for a given article.

The project management part can be found many other places. Whats good about it is that is collected in one software so that copywriters don’t have to switch around with Excel sheets, planner, Podio or other project management tools for content planning and execution.

The tracking area of Content Experience allows you to keep track of individual pieces of content and how they perform. It also give you a macro overview of how you content marketing efforts is doing which is a great wait to visualize progress internally in you organization or to clients.

SearchMetrics Review

Price review

5/10

Prices varies on the different products:

  • Research Cloud: Can be bought at different prices and are, in my opinion, very reasonably priced starting at 69 USD on a monthly basis.
  • Projects: Also price is variable depending on how many keywords you wish and how many and how large crawls you need to perform. The price for SearchMetrics is individually set. Often agencies get a discount and especially global SEO agencies have better prices than if you were making your own inquiry.
  • Content Experience: Is also based on individual pricing and depends on the amount of data you need.

Projects and Content Experience are quite expensive, especially if you are a smaller company. For agencies and larger companies where SEO is larger revenue driver the cost is fair at best.

Even though I can’t tell exact prices here, the cost per keyword in Projects is definitely one of the highest in the market. Thus, if you have a lot of keywords that you want to track the cost for SearchMetrics will be higher compared to other tools. On the other side SearchMetrics also have unique feature to offer. You would have to do an evaluation before choosing. The same thing goes for Content Experience. A bit expensive compared to other similar tools.

The Research Cloud has a very fair price at 69 USD which I would recommend any person working with SEO to acquire.

Data review

7/10

The data on keywords in ResearchCloud is still some of the best, especially in regards to European data. In terms of US data the data is beaten by other tools. However, the breadth of the keyword data is great.

Unfortunately, Searchmetrics’ ability to collect linkdata both into their Research Cloud and into their Projects is plain and simply bad. The amount of links in SearchMetrics equals a quite small percentage of the total amount of link and the amount of links, that you are able to pick up in other tools.

In Projects the data quality depends on how many keywords you have bought. However, you are allowed to work quite effectively with the data via tagging universes.

One of my biggest concerns about especially SearchMetrics Research Cloud and Projects is that they don’t allow to export anything to Excel. Thus, you rely on either their API or to screen dumps from the system when building reports and powerpoints. Also, this makes data more difficult to work and manipulate with when doing deepdives and audits.

In total the strength of Research Cloud is what saves SearchMetrics data score.

Depth review

9/10

One of both the biggest problems with Searchmetrics, but also the biggest strength are the endless views that you can dive into. Searchmetrics have made it possible in all of their tools to discover new things almost every day.

You can perform a lot of different deepdives into bth your crawls, your keyword data in Projects, domains in Research Cloud, and keywords in Content Experience.

User Friendliness

5/10

What SearchMetrics have in depth and data it lacks in user friendliness.

User friendliness of SearchMetrics is, in my opinion, mediocre at best. There is so many different views in the tool that beginners in either SEO or the tool will waste a lot of time just learning the tool. Some will even give up and simple just not use it.

It’s important to take this into account and think about how your own organization looks in terms of their experience and time available to wander around in SearchMetrics to find the graph and metrics you were thinking about. Or just to wander around looking at random graphs and numbers without any purpose.

Agency Friendliness

8/10

As a person who runs a SEO agency I have always liked Searchmetrics for a couple of reasons:

  • They are working really hard to always have personal contact with agencies via their client success managers.
  • Certifications and badges allow you to give employers something to reach for and something you can showcase in pitches.
  • Pricing structure let you control your account and the credits for keywords and domains to your clients in a pretty seamless way.
  • Dashboards always works well when creating reports to clients and letting clients have access to data all the time.

For these reason I give SearchMetrics 8/10. The reason they don’t get the last two points is due to a mixture of ability to export data into own graphs in an easy way, the price being a bit high and the user friendliness.

In a nutshell: Why you should invest in SearchMetrics

Searchmetrics is an all inclusive SEO suite. Unfortunately, that both have its upsides and downsides. What SearchMetrics does really great is tracking and collecting data on a huge amount of keywords that you can get access to via Research Cloud and Content Experience. What they don’t do well is their backlink data.

I will recommend you to buy the SearchMetrics Research Cloud right away if you don’t have it already.

In terms of Projects and Content Experience these two tools should definitely be included in you review of a content marketing tool and a SEO tracking and audit tool. If you include alternatives it might come out being a bit weaker than other setups.
