The SEO tool landscape

When you break down the SEO tool landscape there are numerous different variants of SEO tools with its own purpose. Yet still you can divide SEO tools into a couple of buckets that web have collected.

Some tools allow you to do more than one thing while other SEO tools are even deeper specialized within each theme. The best SEO tools typically handles fewer things while all in one SEO tools is somewhat mediocre in its depth.

  • Ranking and keyword research tools: SEO tools that either find or have data on keywords that you can use for continuous rank tracking or for conducting keyword research. These tools typically evolve around keywords or domains and what those domains is ranking for. See the full list of Keyword Research tools here >>
  • Backlink checkers and link audit SEO tools: SEO tools that let you understand and dive into data on links. See the full list of Backlink Checkers here >>
  • Onsite Audit and crawler tools: These SEO tools crawls your website and bring back data so that you can perform SEO audits. SEO tools like this doesn’t rely on an existing database, but will find all urls on a website by itself, analyze them and report back what you can do for proper SEO. See the full list of SEO Audit tools here >>

How SEOtoola picks SEO tools

Working with SEO for the last 10 years I know my way around the different SEO tools and I know which benefits each tool have. My first hand experience with SEO tools has thus given be insight into which tools that are best.

If there is an important tool that I haven’t reviewed yet, I will buy access to it and review it.
Essentially, only SEO tools that have been tested is on the review list, in order to make sure that the recommendation and review of the SEO tool is as accurate for you as possible.

If you want us to make a review of another SEO tool please feel free to reach out to us, and we will strongly consider whether that particular SEO tool should be apart of the overview.

How we score and evaluate SEO tools

There are a lot of different parameters that influence how good a SEO tool is. We have divided these parameters into five different headings, where we can score them from 1 to 10.

The SEO tool scoring is completely subjective as to my preferred SEO tools, except for price parameters. Here I will try to somewhat compare the SEO tools in the best possible way, so you can pick the best SEO tool at the right price.

Price of the SEO tool

First parameter we score SEO tools on is obviously price. Price models are different and there are a lot of different aspects of pricing that you need to consider before choosing the right plan. Some tools allow for export on cheaper plans while others don’t. Som allow for API access on an earlier level while others don’t.

A SEO tool might seem decently priced at one level, but because you need to be able to have certain amount of users, API access or the possibility to export your data into excel the SEO tool or software become more expensive and not worth the money.

SEO tool data strenght

Often you buy into the data that the SEO tool has acquired, crawled and stored. Comparing data quality is thus essential when choosing the best SEO tool. The Data parameter looks at the data quality and depth by comparing it to similar tools. This will provide an overview of what you can expect before investing in the SEO tool.

Depth of the tool

The depth parameter is how deep your audits and analysis can be made. This basically means that when you look at this parameter you get a picture of how specialised your can use the specific tool.

Often best of breed SEO tool are better than all in one SEO tools. But it’s not always necessary for you to have the best of breed SEO tools as they can get too advanced and difficult to use without providing much extra value. Therefor depth is one parameter so that you can compare this to the user friendliness, and decide what the best SEO tool for you would be.

Tool user friendliness

Not all SEO tools are easy to use and often they can get a bit too technical. Having a user friendly SEO tool is important for your efficiency, so that you won’t waste time looking for features or making mistakes in setting up the SEO tool.

If you are new to SEO focusing on this parameter is a good idea to make sure that you choose a SEO tool that is easy to use right from the start. If you choose a SEO tool that is too difficult to use, this might cause lack of use or making crucial mistakes in you SEO endeavours.

Agency friendliness

Finally, each SEO tool also gets a score on how SEO agency friendly it is. This is a score that covers areas such as the ability to whitelabel audits or export data into your own templates. It also covers more practical issues such as license sharing and how price develops here.

For example, some of the SEO tools works client side, which forces each SEO employee to install the program on his or hers computer. Something that is quite a hassle when working with larger teams.

Things to consider when choosing the right SEO tool

So looking at this overview, how do you then choose the right SEO tool? There are obviously a lot of various variables you need to consider when choosing. Here below I have mentioned some of the things that influence your investment:

  • SEO Budget: How much money do you have to invest in SEO tools? Some SEO tools are very expensive and will need massive investments in running costs.
  • Experience: Have you tried other SEO tools before and for how long have you been working with SEO? The amount of experience you have with them influence the choice. Some SEO tools are very difficult to use and you will here need knowledge about i.e. Proxies, crawler settings or database settings. Also, some tools simply lack usability and thus you need experience with other SEO tools for you to use it properly.
  • Team: Who will be using the SEO tool? The number of people on the team and their roles is important to take into account. SEO tools varies in their friendliness to share data across accounts and take over audits from one another. If you are i.e. using SEO tools to create reports for management, it’s important that the way data is presented makes sense and is easily converted from SEO metrics into more business related metrics.
  • Platform: Take your current platform and setup into account and consider what OS you are using. Mac is not great at working with Excel and a lot of the client side SEO tools simply don’t work here. Then a SaaS SEO tool will work better. Also consider whether you already have a server or want to run one. Finally, consider whether you already have a Dashboard solution in place that you need to feed in data to. Some SEO tools have integration into i.e. Google Data Studio, which can save you a lot of time.
  • Data need: Consider how big your data requirements are. The amount of competitors, the size of your website, and the nature of your keyword universe influence what tool you should choose. If you are looking for a large setup it is not the best idea to go for enterprise SEO tools, but rather choose best of breed where you get more keywords for your SEO tool budget.
